The Drag Triad design was one of the most pivotal releases in SGR history. First introduced in the 1990s, it combined a fierce chrome dragon with three iconic Hondas lined up in reflective detail, creating an image that became instantly recognizable among enthusiasts. This was the design that helped push SGR beyond tuner shops and into major retail — spreading Honda culture to a much wider audience.

“This design was one of the first to make our brand truly successful, as this was the first design to kick off our introduction in retail stores, in particular Miller's Outpost here in California.

At the time, I was only able to get our apparel into a few Tuner Shops, so jumping to a retail store with 300 locations was a BIG deal.

Some of you may remember the old Millers Outpost stores, which eventually became Anchor Blue. (For the younger generation, this was equivalent to a Zumiez or Tillys at the time.)

I still remember our first meeting we had with them — they liked my artwork, but didn’t truly understand the car culture. However, they did know that ‘Dragons on t-shirts’ were hot that year, so if we combined cars with dragons, they would make their first order. Jasen Rodriguez, a talented comic-book inker who eventually worked with me on Max Boost Issue #1, also worked with me to complete the Dragon part of the design.

So, this is it — my Drag Triad design was painstakingly made over weeks of work — back when computers were VERY slow, and it was a PAINFUL process to attempt to do this airbrush technique with first editions of Photoshop. At the time, Photoshop was only used for light photo editing, and using it for artwork, especially something as detailed as this, was extremely rare.

To make matters worse, you could only do ONE undo — that was super tricky.

And it was all colored with a computer mouse.

To be honest, I believe at the time I was one of only 3 artists in the entire USA that could do this type of work digitally. The 1990’s were a different time, for sure.

And the printing technique itself was also unique — it involved a complex set of “index separations” that needed to be done just right so all the pixels printed beautifully on the final screen-printed garment.

We truly spent much time to perfect and innovate the t-shirt printing processes, which became the standards still to this day.”

Now re-released as part of the SGR Classics Collection, the design makes its return on a heavyweight hoodie. The back features the full dragon-and-Honda lineup graphic with an official Honda logo hit, while the front is finished with a clean “SGR Golden Era Original” chest print.
